A Picture Book Written by Jan Yager Illustrated by Mitzi Lyman
"The Cantaloupe Cat will delight every child who follows his paw steps, " writes Barbara Shook Hazen, author of more than 50 childrens books including City Cats, County Cats and The Gorilla Did It, about this new childrens book. She continues, "Jan Yager has created the purrfect self-esteem-enhancing pet . Engaging illustrations and rollicking rhyme add to the fun." Illustrator Mitzi Lyman, who grew up in Massachusetts, has a degree in human development from University of Massachusetts (Amherst). She has studied painting and drawing at the Arts Student League, the School of Visual Arts, and Corcoran School in Washington, D.C., and has had her own graphics design studio. Author Jan Yager, who has a Ph.D. in sociology from the City University of New York, and has taught at the elementary and college levels, based the story of The Cantaloupe Cat on her cat Jerry. She previously worked at Macmillan Publishing Company on the revision of the Bank Street Readers. SUMMARY: Like Jerry, the cat that likes to eat cantaloupe, every animal and every person is special and unique in some way. The last page of the book has questions for parents or educators to explore with children, such as having a discussion about "Tell me whats special about you?" ADDITIONAL PRAISE FOR THE CANTALOUPE CAT: "A charming debut by a talented artist whose pictures work well with a cute story to convey an affectionate message about friendship, feline and human." ¾ Lynn Munsinger, childrens book illustrator, Tacky the Penguin "I really like The Cantaloupe Cat and I think children and parents will like it too! I found myself smiling as I was reading and thats a nice sign." ¾ Kitty Lyons, Childrens Librarian, Westport Public Library "I read this book to my 5-year-old daughter and it quickly became one of her favorites. I found the text playful and fun to read. The drawings are wonderful."
